After 6 months of my diet I lost a good 60-70 lbs which is GREAT....but the dreaded peak was kicking in and if you know me, you know I don’t take NO for an answer.
Two weeks of the scale not moving and I started to get worried. This CAN NOT be the end. I have to keep losing and fight even harder for it. I started to do research, read books, ask people questions and talk to professionals.
I’ve found many reasons why I could be stalling let’s start with what I found out first:
Your head is just not in the game.
Sometimes we want to lose weight for different reasons and sometimes we let our guards down. The first reason a lot of people could be stalling is that they are not doing enough. Are you working out? Are you eating fast food and drinking soda? Is your diet really the best it can be? For this, I would just step up my game and make sure I'm point with my diet and exercise. This is the most obvious reason, so let's move on to the next.
Not eating enough and exercising
Well, let's say your diet is on point and you are exercising 3-5 times a week or more. It's possible you could be doing TOO much. We should be making sure we are getting enough fuel for our bodies when we exercise and I've noticed I stall when I work out and do not eat enough calories, and healthy carbs. On days I know I will be doing strength training, I'll eat more carbs and calories. On days that I don't eat a lot, I'll do light cardio such as walking with no incline. So just be sure you are eating enough calories and carbs when you work out!
Not eating enough Healthy carbs and fiber
Have you ever cheated on your low carb diet and lost more weight?? Yeah me too...here is why..
yeah so when I was on the keto diet (low/no carbs high protein, high fat) I had that piece of cake once or treat and thought oh my goodness, I'm going to gain weight, I sabotaged my diet and ruined everything!!!...the next day I'm down 2lbs...like what the heck? I'm not saying eat cake or treats but try eating more healthy carbs with fiber and this should really help break your stall. Eating no carbs is silly. I see this in a lot of groups and people think carbs are evil. Carbs are not evil but Some carbs are...but we need healthy carbs to survive! I would suggest doing research on healthy carbs and try incorpoing high fiber ones such as beans, legumes, and fruits in your diet more.
Keto..we can't only eat meat and cheese forever...it’s unhealthy
On a high protein no/low carb meat diet, you will lose weight...but eventually you will stall and eating that way can make you more prone to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cancer, and many problems. Once I cut out meat and dairy, I definitely broke my stall with a vengeance. I also started to build more muscle and feel more healthy overall. I feel like with meat and cheese in my diet, I felt sick and stressed all the time and didn't even know it until I fully cut it out and started to feel the effects. More info on why I went vegan can be found here and here!
Liquid diets and fasting
I think of my body as a machine that needs fuel like a fire. If you don't put enough in it, it will burn out and stabilize. So I try to find ways to keep my metabolism burning and going just like a fire. I naturally do not have a fast metabolism so I will probably have to fight with this for the rest of my life. I started doing more 2-3 day liquid fasts of just water. I think I will be doing this biweekly or monthly depending on what my doctor says. For this, I would suggest always reaching out to your doctor first! Doing a liquid diet reset my stomach and my metabolism and I lost a whopping 5lbs in one week! I feel like taking it back to basics really helped me get that fire going and shake things up a good bit.
Carb cycling
Carb cycling always has helped me. Once again this is another method to help keep that metabolism going. It's simple...Higher carb day, higher protein lower carb the next day. This really works and has been a great way to keep things moving and avoiding stalls. Carbs are our friend! Don't hate on them. We do need them to survive! If you find yourself in a stall, try upping your healthy carbs and lowering that fat.
pooping
The first and biggest sign of a stall or digestive issues....not pooping regularly. Increase that fiber and try to poop at least once a day or every other day. Pooping less than that is not normal or okay. Once I realized this, I broke my stall and boosted my metabolism. Eating carbs and fiber helped me poop more regularly.
So there are the things I realized and what has helped me with my stalls. I always suggest talking with your doctor to be safe! I hope this is helpful and opens your mind to other ways to diet and take care of things.
